All of the banners are attention-grabbing and colorful. Only one group has over 70 companies at Photonics West, more than any of the others. Something else distinguishes that group. Can you guess what it is? New York is a State, not a country! And yet we compete with countries to develop the optics, photonics, imaging and display technologies (and companies) of the future. And we do it on a shoestring,...Continue Reading

Researchers at NASA Jet Propulsion Labs (JPL) have successfully tested a second-generation “Cobra” fiber positioner for astronomy, consisting of two rotary piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motors from New Scale Technologies. The second-generation design reduced the number of move iterations required to move an optical fiber to its target position for collecting astronomical data. Design improvements include modification of the hard stops to minimize friction and improve robustness. Details and test results were...Continue Reading
APPLIED IMAGE Group announced the acquisition of MICROTRONICS Inc, a key USA based “mask maker”. MICROTRONICS manufactures glass masks for the semiconductor, hybrid, MEMS, and electro-optical industries. Masks are primarily used to transfer electro-optical designs from the glass imaged plates (that MICROTRONICS manufactures) to the wafer, which becomes the final microelectronic or electro-optical components themselves. It will operate as a wholly owned division of the APPLIED IMAGE group. All of...Continue Reading
