EMF boosts thin-film coating capacity, eyes new markets with acquisition of DichroTec

When EMF Corp. needed to increase its manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demands of its thin-film coatings business, the company found its solution in Rochester.emflogo

With EMF’s recent acquisition of DichroTec Thin Films comes proprietary coating processes and 14 high-capacity, 96-inch coating chambers  that will allow the Dynasil Corp. subsidiary to explore new markets and better serve the needs of its customers, says Paul Schulz, president of EMF Rochester and EMF Ithaca. The newly acquired expertise and manufacturing capacity in Rochester will allow the company’s Ithaca facility to concentrate on custom coatings.

“We acquired expanded capabilities with this acquisition,” Schulz said.  “Think of EMF Ithaca as precision custom coating. Think of EMF Rochester as high-volume production.”

The acquisition is expected to help EMF crack new markets, including fuel cells and high-volume glass for the lighting business, Schulz added. The deal was inked at the end of June.

Founded in 1936, EMF was the first company in the United States to provide evaporated metal thin-film coatings. Today, the company provides thin-film coatings for a broad range of applications, including display systems, instrumentation, satellite communications, flexible substrates, power cell components, glass and lighting. The company was purchased by Dynasil Corp. in 2006. Dynasil develops and manufactures optical detection and
analysis technology and components for the homeland security, medical and industrial markets.
