Morelle Wows at Optica Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science

Congressman Joe Morelle: “Make those connections!”

Ten minutes on stage is all it takes to recognize the most cogent and informed voice for our industry in Congress. Congressman Joe Morelle NY25 Rochester, NY. He understands our issues and knows where to advocate for and make crucial investments in optics, photonics, and imaging for our nation’s future including his support for the #CHIPSforAMERICA act, and #AmeriCOM.

Flanked on stage by an elite group of optical technicians in training from the Monroe Community College Precision Optics Program, Morelle was introduced by Tom Brown, Director of the University of Rochester Institute of Optics and Alexis Vogt, PhD, Endowed Professor and Program Chair, Monroe Community College Optics Program, Rochester, NY.

“…For too long, the United States—and our government—has failed to appreciate just how significant the optics and photonics industry is to nearly every aspect of life as we know it.”

“…but perspectives are improving. Commitments are developing. And the optics and photonics community is finally starting to get the credit you have long deserved.”

“…When you represent Rochester, it’s hard not to have a deep appreciation for this industry, so I set out to find like-minded colleagues who shared my affinity for light-based technologies. Last year I proudly led a bipartisan, bicameral group of colleagues to create the first ever Congressional Optics and Photonics Caucus. Together we work to educate our colleagues, create opportunities—just like this—to connect with constituents and policy experts, and collaborate to ensure the United States is a leader in optics, photonics, and imaging for years to come. We are a small, but growing coalition, and I encourage any of you here today who are not residents of Rochester, NY to reach out to your Member of Congress and encourage them to join our caucus—all are welcome! Make those connections! When it comes to optics and photonics, there is bipartisan consensus that we can, and should, do more to support this industry.”

“Efforts like the CHIPS and Science Act are just the beginning of reorienting federal priorities to seriously invest in R&D efforts and reestablish America as the global leader of innovation. We’re already seeing investments come to life, including Micron’s decision to create a $100 Billion dollar mega-complex in Upstate New York.”
