SPIE International Year of Light Banners Welcome OptiFab Visitors

Student volunteers from the University of Rochester Institute of Optics SPIE Student Chapter helped New York Photonics Executive Director, Tom Battley assemble and install 20 beautiful photo banners at the Greater Rochester International Airport on Friday, October 9.

The banners are there to welcome visitors and exhibitors to Rochester during SPIE Optifab, held in Rochester biannually, and to inform travelers about photonics.

They highlight the many ways that light impacts our lives, and were attracting curious passers by even as they were being assembled.  Afterwards the team went out to lunch!

The banners will be installed at the airport through the end of October.

As the old adage goes: Many hands make light work!

20 Banner celbrating the Internaional Year of Light were on display during Optifab and were at the Rochester International Airport for a month.

On my way back to Rochester, from a long weekend in Puerto Rico, I was pleasantly welcomed by the photonics display at the airport. I am originally from Michigan and it always surprise me of the of Rochestarians who know nothing of being the optic center of the world. I have designed and teach a optics class at school #46 in Rochester, New York. My hope is that the seed would be planted and one day bring to fruition opportunities of training and jobs in the field of photonics. The banners have inspired my to have my students do banners in celebration of light using some of the lessons we are learning about the behavior of light. I would love to have one or more of these U of R students visit our school.

      Ciao!
