July 23rd webcast: COVID-19 Prevention and Testing: Solutions from Optics and Imaging

The rise of the novel coronavirus, and the spread of the COVID-19 sickness, are central challenges facing the world today. Preventing the spread of and testing for COVID-19 are the focus of a massive worldwide research, development, and deployment effort — and some of the first, and subsequently most widely, used approaches have been based on prevention and testing using optical imaging. This webcast consists of short presentations by three leading precision optics and imaging companies: specialists from Ophir, FLIR, and Alluxa will provide an overview of how optical technology is being used to help contain, and to hopefully help diminish, the COVID-19 pandemic. You will leave this webcast with an increased understanding of how our industry is providing solutions to this crisis.

Simon Rankel studied physics and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Ljubljana on the topic of LED and OLED lighting in urban lighting design. He has more than ten years of experience in the lighting industry. After his studies in Ljubljana and Stockholm, he started his career as R&D engineer at Austrian LED specialist company Tridonic, continued as lighting designer at Slovenian company Arcadia Lightwear, and then worked in international lighting for luminaire manufacturer Vertigo Bird. Simon continued his career at a German lamp manufacturing specialist company BLV Licht- und Vakuumtechnik. Today, as a Business Development Manager at laser and light measurement specialist company Ophir, part of MKS Instruments, he focuses on future-oriented technologies related to divergent light measurement.

Rance Fortenberry
Director of Technology
Alluxa

Rance has been Director of Technology at Alluxa since 2007 and has been instrumental in developing many core aspects of Alluxa’s proprietary deposition technology and control algorithms. With 30+ years of experience at the forefront of thin-film, optics, and laser technology, Dr. Fortenberry brings an experienced and creative mind to Alluxa’s technology strategy and engineering efforts. His research and development experience includes roles at Agilent Technologies, Hewlett-Packard, HP Labs, Bookham Technology, ICI Industries in the UK, and the University of Melbourne in Australia. He has contributed to and created breakthroughs in multiple measurement platforms, deposition techniques, optical component products, and optical modulator concepts over the course of his career. Rance has been an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of America (OSA) for more than 30 years. Rance has a Physics degree from the University of Mississippi, and a Ph.D in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona. He is a named inventor on 8 US Patents and he authored over 50 technical publications, including over 35 peer-reviewed papers published in Applied Physics Letters, Optics Letters, Electronics Letters, Journal of Lightwave Technology, and other scientific journals.
